Magnificent delicate pink, fort palace of Amer-beautiful example of Rajput architecture, rises from a rocky mountainside about 11km north of Jaipur. Amer was the ancient capital of Jaipur state. Construction of the fort was begun in 1592 by Maharaja Man Singh, the Rajput commander of later extended by the Jai Singh before move to Jaipur. Visitors are allowed to visit this fort from 9:00am to 4:30pm. After leaving the ticket office, stick to the right of the right of the main stairs, and ascend narrower stairs, the silver entrance door of the small Kali Temple lies at the top. On the left side of the temple, the main stair was DIWAN-I-AM i.e. Hall of public Audience with double row of columns and latticed galleries above. The Maharaja’s apartments are on the higher terrace-you entering through a gateway decorated with mosaics & sculptures. If you want to hire guide, then he charge Rs.100/- to Rs.150/- for 90 minutes. Maximum 4 people at the entrance are an asset here, as there are few Singh and it would be a pity to get lost in the labyrinthine "Zanana” (woman’s Quarter). The Maharaja knows the route to the woman of this his choice each night, but you would not know. There are frequent Buses from “Hawa Mahal”- Jaipur to Amer fort. You can climb up to the fort from the road in about 10 minutes. Even Jeeps are also available to reach Amer Fort, cost Rs.120/- per seat. Riding up, on elephants is very popular; cost Rs.450/- for 4 persons can ride, at a time, on elephant.
